Holder Uses "The Race Card" AGAIN

When it's in political trouble, the left resorts to stoking racial fires. Over the weekend, Attorney General Eric Holder played the race card yet again during an interview with ABC News. Here's how Holder described opposition to President Obama:

"There's a certain level of vehemence, it seems to me, that's directed at me, directed at the president. …There's a certain racial component to this for some people. I don't think this is the thing that is a main driver, but for some there's a racial animus."

Despite his qualifier, Holder knew what the headlines would be. Here's one from The Hill: "Holder Sees 'Racial Animus' in Opposition." Once again the left is trying to demonize people as bigots if they dare to disagree with the left's policies.

What was Holder's proof? He said: "You know, people talking about taking their country back. I can't look into people's hearts, look into people's minds. But it seems to me that this president has been treated differently than others."

People want to take their country back. That's it.

Back to what? Segregation? Jim Crow? Slavery? Of course not.

What people want to go back to is balanced budgets. Back to the knowledge that unborn children are fully human and should be protected by the law. Back to a time when the government understood that religious liberty was a protected right. Back to the time -- just five years ago -- when marriage meant the union of a man and a woman.

When Holder says that taking our country back amounts to bigotry, it suggests bigotry on his part. The "vehemence" of opposition isn't due to the pigmentation of Holder's skin, but the condition of his divisive heart! And what would Mr. Holder say to these black residents of Chicago, who are furious with this administration's coddling of illegal immigrants?

By the way, during the same interview, the attorney general was asked about appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS scandal. He said that it wasn't necessary because "career people" at the Justice Department and FBI were "doing a good, professional job."

Really? Let me remind you that the "career person" Holder selected at the Justice Department to review this scandal just happened to be a donor to liberal causes and candidates.

Meanwhile, Catherine Engelbrecht, president of True The Vote, whose organization is suing the IRS for the harassment it experienced in 2010, told a local talk radio station this morning that she has yet to be contacted by the FBI or the Justice Department as part of their investigations of this scandal. That speaks volumes about the kind of "professional job" Holder's "career people" are doing.

Media Demands Dead Jews

Have you noticed how many reporters, commenting on the Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, report the death toll as if it were somehow proof of Israel's guilt? I was deeply disappointed as I listened to one reporter on the scene comment that no Israelis had been killed yet, while the death toll in Gaza skyrockets. Would more dead Israelis satisfy the reporter?

Over the weekend, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon released a statement that read, in part, "Too many Palestinian civilians have been killed, and any Israeli ground offensive will undoubtedly increase the death toll and exacerbate civilian suffering in the Gaza Strip."

So it's all Israel's fault. The fact that the Palestinians have fired nearly 1,000 rockets at Israel in recent days seems to get lost in the shuffle.

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained yesterday on Fox News Sunday:

"I just want your viewers to imagine the United States being bombarded not in one city or two cities, but in every city between New York and Colorado, 80 percent of your citizens would have to be in bomb shelters or ready to go into bomb shelters within a minute to minute-and-a-half, max. No country can accept that, we can't accept it, and we'll take the necessary actions to stop it."

Netanyahu succinctly summed up the current situation when he said, "The difference between us, we are using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they're using their civilians to protect their missiles."

To amplify the double standard that routinely confronts Israel, an anti-Israel mob attempted to storm a Paris synagogue this weekend. At least three Jews defending the synagogue ended up in the hospital, and this attack barely made the news.

Just imagine if a mob of Jews attacked a mosque. That story would make the front pages. It's now routine for Muslims to attack churches on Sunday mornings, and every time there is a collective yawn from the media. But if a mob of Christians attacked a mosque, there would emergency U.N. meetings, demands for sensitivity training and hearings to learn how a faith could so radicalize its followers.

Border Backlash Grows

Some left-wing strategists are beginning to question the conventional wisdom of pushing comprehensive immigration reform given the current border crisis. One liberal operative said, "Democrats talk about the morality of rescuing these kids from Central America. … At the same time, what about the kids fleeing small-town and rural America because there are no economic opportunities?" That is a question many well-meaning Americans are asking too.

The fact that thousands of women and children are streaming across the border, forcing the Obama Administration to ask for billions of additional taxpayer dollars, demonstrates beyond any doubt that our borders are not secure. What's happening on the southern border goes beyond politics and immigration reform.

We can debate whether immigration levels should go up or down. We can debate whether so-called "Dreamers" deserve a pathway to citizenship. But as former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan asked in a recent column, "Is a nation without borders a nation?" History teaches that the answer is "No."

If America effectively ceases to be a nation, the humanitarian crisis at the border will be just the beginning of the human suffering.
