Obama's Demagoguery
President Obama held a rare White House press conference Friday afternoon in which he actually took a few questions from reporters. Asked to explain his unlawful delay in implementing parts of Obamacare, the president lashed out at Republicans with his usual demagoguery. Here's what Obama said:
- "The one unifying principle in the Republican Party at the moment is making sure that 30 million people don't have health care… The idea that you would shut down the government unless you prevent 30 million people from getting health care is a bad idea."
Obama repeated this statement in a variety of ways during his remarks, almost as if he had rehearsed it and was just waiting for the opportunity to unleash this zinger.
Of course opposition to Obamacare is not driven by a desire to deny people health care. It is about stopping the fundamental transformation of America to European-style socialism. It is about stopping Big Government's ever-expanding control of our lives and the economy.
Not surprisingly, the leftist reporters let Obama get away with making this absurd charge. If a conservative president had said something similarly derisive about the motives of congressional liberals, the media would have erupted in righteous anger.
But journalists are liberals and they agree with Obama's worldview. So it was simply accepted at face value, picked up and replayed extensively over the weekend.
Reid: Obamacare A Step Toward Single-Payer
Make no mistake about it: Opposition to Obamacare is about stopping Big Government's ever-expanding control of our lives. But you don't have to take my word for it. Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid told a Nevada PBS station that Obamacare was just "a step in the right direction."
What direction might that be? According to one news report, Reid was pressed as to whether he meant doing away with insurance-based coverage entirely. Reid responded, "Yes, yes. Absolutely, yes."
Reid added that during attempts to draft Obamacare in 2009, "We had a real good run at the public option … don't think we didn't have a tremendous number of people who wanted a single-payer system." But Harry Reid and his liberal allies just couldn't round up enough votes for a full-blown socialist health care scheme then. So we got Obamacare as a stepping stone.
Barack Obama has spoken openly about his support for a single-payer system, adding, "But I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's going to be potentially some transition process."
That's all Obamacare is -- just a transition process. Or in Harry Reid's view, a "step in the right direction" toward to a socialist Big Government scheme. Those of us who do not see the European socialist welfare state as an attractive economic model are right to oppose it.
Republicans Go Home & Hear Call To Fight Harder
Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) is a staunch conservative Republican. In 2008, Harris challenged and defeated a moderate GOP incumbent in the primary, but narrowly lost the general election. Two years later, Harris ran again and defeated the incumbent Democrat by double-digits. But at a recent town hall event, Rep. Harris got an earful from his constituents -- his conservative constituents.
One man told Rep. Harris, "I want Boehner up there defying [Obama] and saying, 'We're going to impeachment with you if you do not start obeying the laws!' … Listen, we're dying out here because you guys are being nice guys! This is not a Boy Scout meeting!"
A woman standing nearby chimed in, "It's not! And you're acting like Boy Scouts! You've got to fight!" Watch it here.
Wasting Your Tax Dollars
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is warning that additional sequestration budget cuts may lead to a massive reduction of troop levels and the mothballing of aircraft carriers. I do not want to see our troops bear the brunt of budget cuts, but there are plenty of places the Pentagon could look to save money.
Here's a suggestion: Cancel next year's "Diversity Day" celebrations.
When most of us think about diversity, drag queens probably don't come to mind. But last week the Los Angeles Air Force Base featured a performance by Jewels and the Brunchettes. When asked to explain why a drag queen performance was part of the "Diversity Day" event, a military spokesman responded:
- "Drag acts to this day represent the struggle for freedom and equality of the LGBT community, while at the same time providing a deep-rooted historical form of entertainment for the LGBT culture. Drag queen acts are historically one of the main forms of entertainment in the LGBT culture, having its roots in the earliest of days of the gay rights movement."
One airman said, "We can't even have Bibles on our desks. … The display was totally inappropriate and offensive."
From my office window I can see a soaring sculpture across from the Pentagon honoring the brave men and women of the U.S. Air Force who have courageously defeated tyrannies around the world and defended our constitutional republic. No enemy has ever been able to lay them low and emasculate their courage. It has taken the extreme left and its pro-homosexuality agenda to do that.
